Please welcome new NFIMR director!
January 22, 2014
The National Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Resource Center (NFIMR) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) are very happy to announce that Jodi Shaefer, RN, PhD will be the new NFIMR Director. NFIMR is a collaborative effort between the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Jodi's involvement with FIMR started in the early 90’s through the Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs (ASIP). As an NFIMR consultant, she has provided educational programs on the FIMR process. Her multiple NFIMR publications include cross cultural expressions of grief and loss, annotated bibliography on bereavement, and home visiting. Jodi brings skills in service delivery, education, and research, including extensive local, state, national, and international experience in program implementation and evaluation. Most recently, she has been an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. In that position, she demonstrated outstanding teaching and received the JHU SON Alumni award for excellence in undergraduate teaching and Office of Teaching Excellence, Teaching Innovation Award. She was the Director for the Center for Infant and Child Loss, a Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene program and a prior president of ASIP.
Jodi is committed to NFIMR’s approach in addressing infant mortality and other health disparities. She has commented, "The maternal interview provides unique and essential data to inform recommendations for system changes. It is effective because communities are empowered to change their systems of care based on data. The current inclusion of Life Course Theory is a logical progression and provides a theoretical basis to examine health disparities."
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Shaefer to the NFIMR team!
